When Can Tomb Raider Fans Expect Another Game?

The rebooted Tomb Raider series from Crystal Dynamics, which began with Tomb Raider in 2013, has been an incredible success. The original and the sequels led to the revitalization of the franchise – Rise of the Tomb Raider in 2015 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider in 2018 – and were met with strong critical acclaim and were hugely successful commercially.

The third game left a few threads hanging, indicating the potential for future Lara Croft storylines in this series. However, players may have to wait for the next generation of consoles before a new adventure is released.

Rebooted Games Met With Critical Acclaim

There have been almost 20 Tomb Raider games in total, in a franchise that has spanned four generations of consoles, with the original game being first introduced in 1996. However, there was a period during which it seemed that the series was going to die out. The games lost their spark and it seemed that each new release was treading a lot of the same ground as the ones that preceded it.

Luckily, Crystal Dynamics gave the franchise a much-needed overhaul in 2013 and this has helped it to grow massively in the years since. The new titles have been lauded by critics and players alike for their immersive gameplay and masterly-crafted storytelling.

Square Enix Will Not Kill This Franchise

Square Enix publishes the Tomb Raider franchise, and it is highly unlikely that the company will stop producing one of its biggest cash cows. The Tomb Raider brand is massive and spans way beyond the console offerings. There have been three Hollywood films so far which have been inspired by the console series with Angelina Jolie originally taking on the title role of Lara Croft. In addition to this, there have been companion games for other platforms, such as Lara Croft Go, which is an innovative spin-off game released initially for smartphones and had you solving puzzles as a focus.

In the iGaming industry, there are numerous Tomb Raider-themed slots including Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider II, and Lara Croft: Temples and Tombs. These titles are available to play at Dunder, which is one of the top-rated online casinos. Because of quarantine, the site is offering new players a 200 percent deposit bonus. Other mobile titles based on Tomb Raider exist as well.

As well as Lara Croft Go there was Lara Croft: Relic Run. All of these games provide players with a slightly different way to enjoy Lara Croft, but all include the same overarching theme of archaeological adventure.

Next Generation Consoles Looking Likely

With Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix putting a lot of time and effort into the development of their Marvel’s Avengers game, it is unlikely that they have had time to work on a sequel to Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The superhero adventure is due to hit shelves in September 2020, just a few months before the release of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. For this reason, it would be wise to assume that the next Tomb Raider title will be made for the upcoming consoles.

The three rebooted Tomb Raider games released on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have been some of the standout titles of the current consoles. With Tomb Raider being such a massive franchise, Square Enix is surely going to make more games in the future. However, fans will probably have to wait for the next generation of consoles before a new title drops.
